When you’re pregnant, you need to take extra precautions, being safe and secure is very important for you and your baby.

If you’re traveling by car, there are some things you should know about – like seat belts. Seat belts save lives and there is no evidence that they threaten the baby; in fact they protect the baby by protecting the mother. You should try though a different position for the seat belt, now that you’re pregnant.

The shoulder strap should sit between your breasts and the lap belt should rest below the bump not over it.

Another thing that protects you and your baby during traveling is the airbags, so there is no need to disconnect the airbag; it is situated too far away to affect your bump in case of emergency. When traveling by plane, make sure you do your flying between 15 and 28 weeks – there is a lower risk of miscarriage or labor during this time frame. Avoid dehydration, so drink plenty of water before and during the flight.

Wear fitting clothes and comfortable shoes, make sure you rotate your ankles regularly (water retention during pregnancy often causes ankles, feet, wrists and hand swell), and position the seat belt underneath your bump and tell staff you are pregnant when checking-in.

You may also want to consult your GP before booking a flight.

Travel safe!
