While we don’t toss the word icon around lightly, Sophia Loren has earned it.  Even now at 79, she creates a buzz where ever she goes, most recently on the set of her new short film The Human Voice, directed by her son Eduardo Ponti. From the breakout Italian-language film The Gold of Naples (1954), to her five-film deal with Paramount Pictures, to Two Women (1960), for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award, Loren’s full lips, almond eyes and hourglass figure have attracted the attention of men and women alike. And her sultry, feminine stylescooped tops, nipped-in waists and kohl-lined boudoir eyeshas been an inspiration to designers, photographers, models and fashion-lovers for over 50 years.

For spring and summer 2013—and even into fall—headscarves, full skirts and high-waisted shorts and pants (often paired with cat eyeliner and fluttery lashes) made their mark on several shows including Temperley London and Erdem. Not only does her style fit the mid-century silhouettes that are beginning to emerge this year (and are a top fall trend), but she has also long inspired Dolce & Gabbana’s runway presentations and recent ad campaigns starring another Italian beauty, Monica Bellucci.

We’ve caught the Loren fashion bug, too. For May’s cover shoot with Christina Hendricks, the Mad Men actress was styled in Italian bombshell silhouettes such as the black and pink floral Dolce & Gabbana dress pictured below.
